Trip to Tolsta

Tolsta is a township some 13 miles north of Stornoway on the east coast of Lewis. It is famous for two lovely beaches and the alleged practice of putting the cockerel under a basket on the Sabbath. Not sure that that is still being done. I went to the beach at Garry, 2 miles north of Tolsta, but one of my companions came away with a scare: sank into quicksand and did a strange injury to a finger as a result. The top joint of the injured finger now persistently stands at a 45 degree angle to the rest of the finger, never mind what you do. Got an improvised mallet splint until a GP can be seen on Monday - one saving grace, it's not painful.

Here's some pictures

Those who follow my blipfoto output are familiar with this image - an old pussycat warming herself by a fire

  1. I had to chuckle at the kindling on the hearth....looks like my pile of kindling I made earlier today from some old cedar planks cut to length. And that's one smart kitty... Love all the pictures. And as far as that finger is concerned~OUCH !!!!!!

  2. Well done with improvising a splint for the time being Guido. Strange that it doesn't hurt? Your friend was in good hands. I once had a scare like that on the Far Sawrey side of Windermere. Walking up the fells I encountered a bog which frightened me as I began to sink quickly. I was carrying my firstborn at the time. I took off like a bat out of hell and left my shoe behind to be recovered once I had calmed down.
I hope your walking companion gets it sorted out on Monday.
These were wonderful photos. Especially the one of the cat. I can hear the fire crackling and it purring contentment.

  3. Sorry to read of your friends injury Guido,I hope the finger soon heals and they continue to be pain free. What great pictures once again,oh!! I do enjoy them. The kitty one reminds me of many years ago when I used to chop firewood for my parents.Nothing like a good old coal fire.My father was a coal Miner, so we always had one when I was a girl.Kitty wasn't the only one at that time who nestled close for a warm He-He.As for the quicksand I have always had a fear of that happening when walking beaches etc.Take Care God Bless Kath xx

  4. Your photos are exquisite as always. Though I wonder what that is in the middle-some kind of shells. Quicksand? Scary. How odd that your friend had such an injury and it wasn't painful. Broken? I love the photo of the cat by the fire. And the sheep. They are beautiful. I am so living in the wrong place. LANDLOCKED no beach within hundreds of miles. LOL Take good are.
