What would you do, if your daughter aged 9 was raped by her stepfather, resulting in a double pregnancy? That awful decision was cast at the parents of a young girl in Brazil. The mother of the girl decided on an abortion, which was carried out last week.
The Roman Catholic Church in Brazil has excommunicated the girl, her mother and the doctors involved in the abortion, saying that the law of God stands above any law of man. The law of God is 'you will not kill'. The law of man was: Abortion only allowed if the pregnancy is a threat to the health of the woman involved.
I am absolutely appalled at this attitude, condoned by the Vatican incidentally, which is beyond description in my book. A girl of 9, having twins? After sexual abuse? Oh dear. What sort of a message does that send out. I'd better cut short my post, else I'd offend a fair few people.
I read about this earlier in the week, Guido, and I share your outrage.

I just can't imagine....any of this.
ReplyDeleteI feel exactly the same as you Guido, the poor child and her family. It`s just too appalling for words.

I have never been one to approve of many of the Catholic church policies. To think that they would do that to a child after such trauma. I think they are better off without that church anyhow.
ReplyDeletedid the step father get excommunicated? seems like something should have happened to him; such a sad situation; its a shame the outcome of it all ways around; that poor little girl

That's a HARD CASE!! It's HORRIBLE that a 9 year old would have to ever deal with this kind of trauma... ANY of it!! Very Sad! I am glad that she aborted, I personally don't approve of abortion, but there are such times... and I have to say if that were my daughter, I'd have her abort, too.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is 9...I can't even think about it! Appalling! Ignorance is the source of all evils! Ciao. A.
ReplyDeleteI'm appalled too. Actually I believe the girl has not been excommunicated - because she's innocent, but the church still expected her to carry the twins and probably die in the process. No mention of the father being cast out... and I bet he won't be.
ReplyDeleteThis is one reason I do not belong to a formal religion as it seems every word of the doctrine is fixed in stone, if the religion is very old at all, and there is nobody with enough power to say well, we need to back off on this one for fear of turning people away from the religion and thus having less influence say on the ones who really are using abortion irresponsibly. I understand the point you are making. Gerry
ReplyDeleteAny condemnation should have been placed on the step father. The girl was an innocent victim. It's hard to understand the church's policy in situations like this. I wonder if the church had any other solution for her. Like caring for her during what would be a difficult pregnancy and then finding a loving home for the babies.....Linda in snowy & cold Washington state
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe that these kinds of views still exsist but they do and within that same religion both mother and daughter and children gave been doubly condemed, and the chruch would rather they lived in shame than helping them and what happened to this man!

Abortion has always been against the Roman Catholics Church's teaching. It is always murder - no exceptions. Excommunication has always been the punishment.
ReplyDeleteYou cant 'cherry pick' which of the Church's laws you like or dislike and whilst I agree this situation was awful for the child and the mother, as a Catholic myself, I cannot critisise the Church because - Its my faith, I live by its laws (best I can) and I know what the result will be if I break them.
Did Jesus himself not say in words to this effect
ReplyDelete"Let them who throw the first stone ?...and all who were condeming walked away.
His comandment to us ALL was LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
Where is the love in the actions of this church.
God forgive us all.
